Heuristic means "serving to discover or find out," 1821, irregular formation from Greek heuriskein "to find; find out, discover; devise, invent; get, gain, procure" (from PIE *were- (2) "to find;" cognate with Old Irish fuar "I have found.")

Heuristic is best known as a "rule of thumb" or a mental shortcut. Heuristics are what we use to keep our lives and processes simple. The problem with heuristics is the impact on the changing reality. The mental shortcuts can be short-sighted, blinding us to a new path forward. Emerging technology enables better problem solving and decision making.
