Metric is the science of versification, 1760, from Latinized form of Greek he metrikē "prosody," plural of metron "meter, a verse; that by which anything is measured; measure, length, size, limit, proportion" (from PIE root *me- (2) "to measure"). Middle English had metrik "the branch of music which deals with measure or time" (late 15c.), from Medieval Latin metricus.

Choosing the correct metric to track success is one of the most important business decisions for companies. Let's not confuse metrics with KPI (key performance indicator.) A key performance indicator is used to measure performance and success. A metric is nothing more than a number within a KPI that helps track performance and progress. Many companies use NPS (Net Promoter Score) as a KPI to determine the strength of brand, relationship, value of bonuses, etc. The Net Promoter Score is calculated as the difference between the percentage of Promoters and Detractors. The NPS is not expressed as a percentage but as an absolute number lying between -100 and +100. The issue with NPS is the way the questions are worded. The questions are leading. There were many leading brands with a high NPS who are no longer in business. Think about other ways to query customers and select the best KPI and metric to drive customer behavior.
