The term "The Internet of Things" was coined by Kevin Ashton in a presentation to Proctor and Gamble in 1999. Ashton is a co-founder of MIT's Auto-ID Lab. In 1990 the first toaster was connected to the Internet and in 1999, IBM developed the first Machine-to-Machine protocol called MQ Telemetry Transport (MQTT).

IoT is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers ( UIDs ) and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. Examples of IoT include connected security systems, thermostats, cars, electronic appliances, lights in household and commercial environments, alarm clocks, speaker systems, vending machines and more. In the future everything will be connected into the IoT so working with trillions of bits of information will require a combination of AI, blockchain, quantum computing, and cybersecurity.
