Inter is a word-forming element used freely in English, "between, among, during," from Latin inter (prep., adv.) "among, between, betwixt, in the midst of." Operable originated in the 1640s, "practicable," from operate + -able, or else from Late Latin operabilis. Surgical sense, "capable of treatment by operation," recorded by 1904. The National Institute of Standards and Technology definition of blockchain is, "An interoperable blockchain architecture is a composition of distinguishable blockchain systems, each representing a unique distributed data ledger, where transaction execution may span multiple blockchain systems, and where data recorded in one blockchain is reachable, verifiable and referenceable by another possibly foreign transaction in a semantically compatible manner."

The key to survival of blockchain technology is the interoperability of the architecture. Interoperability forces a deeper re-thinking into how permissioned and permissionless blockchain systems can interoperate without a third party (such as an exchange.) Is blockchain the next version of the internet? Is blockchain the future of global transactions? Without interoperability, neither the internet nor blockchain can survive.
