The term freight is from early the early 15c. "transporting of goods and passengers by water," variant of fraght, which is from Middle Dutch or Middle Low German vracht, vrecht (see fraught). Danish fragt, Swedish frakt apparently also are from Dutch or Frisian. Also from Low German are Portuguese frete, Spanish flete, and French fret, which might have changed the vowel in this variant of the English word. Meaning "cargo of a ship" is from c. 1500.

There are four major types of freight transportation; ground (road), rail, ocean, and air. When using ground freight shipping, the two major types are less-than-truckload (LTL) and full-truckload (FTL). LTL refers to goods and commodities that do not fill up the entire truck while (FTL) is when an entire truck is dedicated to one shipper. When using ocean freight shipping the services include; FCL (Full Container Load), LCL (Less-than-Container Load), Temperature Controlled, Dangerous Goods, and Break bulk / Non-Containerized Load. When using air freight shipping there is expedited or standard, door to door, and airport to airport. Many freight options from which to choose.
