Status quo means unaltered condition, 1833, from Latin status quo "the state in which," hence "existing state of affairs." Also status quo ante "the state in which before, state of affairs previous" (1877).

Innovative ideas challenge the status quo. Innovations threaten previous successes, cast previous innovations as conservative, and take resources away from other important programs. New ideas present new choices with unknown risks. Choosing the status quo may not be the best path of survival. It is also important not to change for change's sake.
