The term signal is from the late 14c., "visible sign, indication," from Old French signal, seignal "seal, imprint, sign, mark," from Medieval Latin signale "a signal," from Late Latin signalis (adj.) "used as a signal, pertaining to a sign," from Latin signum "identifying mark, sign."

Honest signals are either to costly to make or difficult to suppress so honest signals are a good way to signal intent. Influence, mimicry, activity, and consistency are examples of honest signals. Take turns in a conversation. Listen and actively debate. Signal intentions to solve problems.
