Provenance

May 28, 2019

The term provenance is from 1785, from French provenance "origin, production," from provenant, present participle of Middle French provenir "come forth, arise, originate," from Latin provenire "come forth, originate, appear, arise," from pro "forth."

Provenance is the history of the ownership and transmission of an object. The term comes originally from the art world, where it refers to the chronology of the ownership and/or location of a work of art. Having detailed evidence of provenance can help to establish that a painting has not been altered or stolen, and is not a forgery. The provenance of an item becomes more important in the global e-commerce age as a means to confirm authenticity and reduce counterfeits. Provenance in the food supply, goods, and services brings trust into the equation. Blockchain is being positioned as the answer to ensure provenance.
