Origin in the 1620s (implied in predicted), "foretell, prophesy," a back formation from prediction or else from Latin praedicatus, past participle of praedicere "foretell, advise, give notice," from prae "before" (see pre-) + dicere "to say" (from PIE root *deik- "to show," also "pronounce solemnly"). We are in an age where AI is making it is easier to "foretell" the future. The question of whether the future is predictable or not is interesting. Nature is difficult to predict. Is it easy to predict when your supply chain will be disrupted? Can AI predict stock prices? Algorithms are becoming more and more accurate in predicting the stock market. AI can predict buying behavior, gentrification, and failures of systems. The power of data and computing power can predict the future. The accuracy of the predictions is where machine learning will continue to progress. Hold on tight for the AI ride of your life.
