Human-machine-interface (HMI) began as on/off devices and is changing to become complex, sophisticated systems for monitoring and analysis. Applications within Industry 4.0 center around machine control achieving new levels of safety and efficiency. For example, machine operators using wearables or AR glasses to receive physical feedback from haptic technologies, maintenance professionals able to visualize machine status in real-time, and remote collaboration allowing off-site specialists to consult or guide local technicians through tasks that would otherwise require travel. Up until now, HMI evolution was driven primarily by technological development. Today, HMI is driven more by the demands of the end user. Today’s end user is familiar with technology and wants it in the workplace with the same experience in the plant as in daily life."
