Eco is shortened from ecology. System arrived in the 1610s, "the whole creation, the universe," from Late Latin systema "an arrangement, system," from Greek systema "organized whole, a whole compounded of parts," from stem of synistanai "to place together, organize, form in order," from syn- "together" (see syn-) + root of histanai "cause to stand," from PIE root *sta- "to stand, make or be firm, " according to the Online Etymology Dictionary. Ecosystems are an essential part of our lives. In a business sense, an ecosystem is the parts of your business that must work together to keep your business "alive." The list of components in your ecosystem is endless. What is the strength of your suppliers, customers, employees, technology, and vendors. Are your suppliers finanacially sound? Have you audited your suppliers? Is your supplier base diversified enough to mitigate the risks that are sure to come? Do you have a diverse set of customers? Are your customers finanacially sound? Are your employees healthy and happy? What is the financial strength of your vendors? Can your technology sustain a cyberattack? Can your business prevent a cyberattack? What is the strength of your ecosystem? What is the strength of your mesh?
